One of the most common questions we get is: when should I come? The honest answer is that Lisbon is a rewarding city year-round — but not all seasons are equal. After ten years of hosting guests in every month, here’s what we actually think.
Spring — March to May
Spring is lovely. The jacaranda trees lining Avenida da Liberdade bloom purple in April, the temperatures are mild (17–22°C), and the city hasn’t yet tipped into tourist season. Restaurant queues are manageable, the miradouros aren’t packed, and you’ll find good availability for Fado houses and day trips.
The catch: March can still be cool and rainy. Pack layers and a waterproof.
Best for: First-time visitors who want decent weather without the crowds.
Summer — June to August
We’ll be honest: August is our least favourite month in Lisbon. The heat can be punishing (regularly above 35°C), many neighbourhood restaurants close for the owner’s holiday, and the tourist density in Alfama and Baixa reaches levels that make it hard to enjoy the city properly.
June and July are significantly better — warm, busy but not overwhelming, and the long evenings are genuinely magical.
The catch: Accommodation prices peak, everything popular fills up, and the city feels less like itself in August.
Best for: Beach extensions (Cascais, Comporta), festivals, and those who don’t mind the heat. Avoid August if you can.
Autumn — September to October ★ Our Pick
September and October are, without question, the best months to visit Lisbon. The summer crowds have gone, prices drop noticeably, the weather is still warm and sunny (22–27°C), and the city returns to itself. Local restaurants reopen, the miradouros are peaceful again, and the quality of light in the late afternoon is extraordinary.
October in particular is a favourite — the city has a quieter, more contemplative mood that suits its character perfectly.
Best for: Everyone. Genuinely the sweet spot.
Our tip: Book a week in September or October and you’ll have the best of Lisbon with none of the drawbacks of summer.
Winter — November to February
Underrated. Winter in Lisbon is mild by European standards (12–16°C), rainy in spells but rarely relentlessly so, and the city feels genuinely lived-in. The museums, markets, and Fado houses have their regular crowd back. Christmas in Baixa is well done without being overwhelming.
The big advantage: prices are at their lowest and availability is excellent. You’ll eat better (no tourist-adjusted menus), pay less, and share the city with people who actually live there.
The catch: Some beach towns and outdoor restaurants operate reduced hours. Pack good rain gear.
Best for: Budget-conscious travellers, repeat visitors, and anyone who wants Lisbon as it really is.
Our Recommendation
Come in September or October. Failing that, spring (April–May) is an excellent second choice. If winter dates are your only option, don’t hesitate — you’ll be pleasantly surprised.
The one month we’d genuinely steer you away from is August. Unless you have specific reasons, the Lisbon of August is a hotter, more expensive, more crowded version of what you could have in October.
