Best Restaurants in Lisbon: Where Locals Actually Eat

Lisbon has no shortage of restaurants, but finding the ones that locals actually eat at — rather than the ones designed to catch tourists walking past — takes years of trial and error. We’ve done that work for you.

Here are the places we send every single guest, and eat at ourselves.

O Velho Eurico (Mouraria)

This modern tasca serves bold, no-nonsense Portuguese food in a room that’s always too loud and too full. The kitchen respects tradition but isn’t afraid to push it.

Best for: Diners who want atmosphere as much as food.

Why we love it: It feels like a Lisbon tavern reborn for the 21st century. Order whatever they recommend and share everything.

Zé da Mouraria (Mouraria)

A true Lisbon institution. Old-school, unfussy, and generous to a fault — hearty dishes served in enormous portions that haven’t changed in decades.

Best for: Groups who want to eat family-style.

Our tip: Arrive hungry and bring friends. Dishes come in cast iron pans built for sharing. Don’t bother with the menu — just ask what’s good that day.

Cervejaria Ramiro (Intendente)

Lisbon’s most famous seafood restaurant. Always buzzing, always excellent. Locals and visitors alike crowd in to crack crab legs and dunk bread into buttery garlic clams.

Best for: Anyone who loves seafood and wants to do it properly.

Why we love it: There’s nothing fancy about it — just incredible produce and a kitchen that knows exactly what to do with it. End with the famous prego steak sandwich.

Taberna da Rua das Flores (Chiado)

One of the original modern tascas in Lisbon. Inventive Portuguese cuisine rooted in tradition but full of surprises — the menu changes daily based on what’s good at the market.

Best for: Those seeking something uniquely Lisbon in an intimate space.

Our tip: No reservations. Go early — the queue starts forming before the doors open. It’s worth every minute of the wait.

Tasquinha do Lagarto (Campolide)

A local favourite since 1973, this Sporting-themed tasca has walls covered in memorabilia and a kitchen that cooks like someone’s grandmother. Comforting, generous, and completely unpretentious.

Best for: Anyone craving honest, home-style Portuguese cooking.

Why we love it: The staff are warm, the portions are enormous, and you’ll linger over dessert and a bica without anyone rushing you out.

Our Recommendation

If you’re visiting for the first time, start with Cervejaria Ramiro — there’s nowhere better to understand what Lisbon does with seafood. For a more local, neighbourhood feel, try Taberna da Rua das Flores and let the kitchen decide.

Our apartments are a short trip from all of these — we’re happy to help with directions and reservations over WhatsApp.
